What is the difference between the two phases of Romantic poetry movement?
Wikipedia says that the 1st phase included Wordsworth and Coleridge and the 2nd phase included Lord Byron, Blake, etc.
I’m curious as to what the difference between those two groups of poets And Poetry is.
That’s not totally right.
The first phase is traditionally Blake, Wordsworth, and Coleridge. Blake was born in the 1750s. Wordsworth and Coleridge were born in the early 1770s. All, but less-so Blake, were coming of age during the French Revolution, which started in 1789. It began with the idealism of liberty and classical learning, but as the ensuing wars raged on for 26 years, this very well educated group of poets were badly disillusioned. Oddly, all three lived to be old and perhaps a bit crabby.
The second phase is always Byron, Shelley, and Keats. They were born about a generation later, and were babies when the French Revolution started. They would have felt far less personally betrayed by the wars, and were also all fortunate enough to die young. (Byron was oldest at 36.)
In terms of poetry, perhaps the real reason for the phases is that in the first group, Wordsworth and Coleridge were close friends: take a look at the Lyrical Ballads they wrote in their mid-twenties. These are poems of nature and the picturesque, rather than of society; they also rhyme and have metre, but have much freer form than, say, the works of Pope, Dryden, or even Milton.
In the next generation, Byron and Shelley were close friends; their work was perhaps a bit more personal. Byron was, in many ways, a classicist, considering that Don Juan is a punchy satire. Keats mainly wrote Love Poetry. Blake was insane, but probably my favourite poet after Shakespeare.
Yet Blake wasn’t really the beginning of Romanticism either: there were poets such as Cowper and Young decades, or even a century earlier than the late Romantics. And even these borrow themes from Virgil and Theocritus, who have influenced all Western poets. So think of it as a convenient label for some years not too long ago.
