Literature is literally "knowledge of letters, as in the first sense given in Dictionary Oxford English, the term, however, generally come to identify a set of texts. The word "literature" written in lower case "l" can refer to any form of writing, such as tests, while the "literature" spelled with a capital "L" may refer to a series of works literary world or in connection with a specific culture. A Poem is a work of art usually written in verse. Poems rely heavily on imagery, precise word choice, and metaphor, can be adopted the form of measures consisting of patterns of stresses (metric feet) or models of different length syllables (as in classical prosody), which may or may not use of rhyme. You can not easily characterize poetry precisely. In general, however, poetry as a form of literature makes some significant use of formal properties of words that uses the properties attached to the written or spoken words, rather than its meaning. Metro depends on syllables and on rhythms of speech, the rhyme and alliteration depend on words that have a similar approach. Some modern poets such as EE Cummings, made extensive use of the words "visually.
Poetry perhaps earlier than other forms of literature: the first known examples, the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh (dated around 3000 BC), parts of the Bible, and structures existing Homer (Iliad and Odyssey). In cultures based primarily on oral traditions the formal characteristics of poetry often have a function mnemonic, and important texts: legal, genealogical or moral, for example, may appear the first verse.
